Summer 2014

It’s that time of year again! We’re gearing for another fun-filled summer with lots of opportunities for discipleship, fellowship and service. Here is an overall look at what’s coming your way but keep updated on the specifics through our Facebook page, Instagram and local newspapers. If you ever have a question, feel free to email us at or get in touch directly with Executive Director, Katelyn Holmer.

Children, Youth & Young Adults

Kidz Club is best described as a summer long VBS for K-5th grade students. We play lots of games, sing lots of songs and learn about who God is. We’re excited to announce that this year we will be partnering with the local Presbyterian Church for lunch right after our lessons. They are providing a free lunch to all children/youth and their parents in town from 12-1pm. We will begin meeting in Lake Park on Wednesdays from 10-12 (starting June 18th) and then walk to the Presbyterian church for lunch. If you are a junior high, high school or college student, we would appreciate your help leading Kidz Club. Please visit the Kidz Club tab under Student Ministries for more information and applications for students and volunteers. If you have multiple children and not all are old enough to participate, please contact Katelyn about bringing them along (depending on our number of student volunteers).

Youth Group will still be meeting for both Junior and Senior high at Common Ground North (310 Locust) at their usual times. Since it’s summer, students will be “moving up” to their next grade level (upcoming 6th graders will join junior high youth group and upcoming freshmen will join senior high youth group). We’re also taking the senior high students to Daytona Beach for their biannual discipleship retreat. If you are interested in partnering with us financially for that trip, please let us know and we will give you more information. Jordan and Carolyn Zimmer are the contacts for any questions.

The Young Adults group (18-24 yr old) meet every Monday night for a study through The Gospel Primer by Caesar Kallnowski. Diving into what it means to learn and live out the Gospel through community, this group also assists and eats at the local Monday night meals. Contact Brady Zimmer for more information.

Family Nights

Come join us every second Sunday at Lake Park from 6:00-8:00pm for food, fellowship and fun! As always meat will be provided, so we ask that you bring a side dish or dessert to share. Anyone is invited, so bring a friend or two. We always have a blast at these nights and it’s a great way to get to know other people in the community. We look forward to seeing you there!

  • June 8th
  • July 13th
  • August 10th (bring a swimsuit!)

Common Ground’s Annual Golf Outing will be Saturday, August 16th and this year we are changing some things up. We’re planning on making it a family event up at Lake Park with a big meal, tournaments for youth and a possible raffle. Keep checking back here, on our social media sites and in the local newspapers for more information closer to the event date.

Service Opportunities

Two times a week some young men going through the ABIDE program at Crosswalk Fellowship lead service projects out in Goofy Ridge and Edgewood Terrace. On Tuesdays the crew leads a Kidz Club out at the Ridge from 2:30-8:00pm going through the same curriculum we will be doing here in Delavan. Thursdays from 12:00-4:30pm consists of anything from patching a hole in someone’s roof to maintaining the two gardens we have planted in both locations. If you can’t personally attend these service projects but still want to help, we are always in need of building materials and lawn care supplies. Your contacts for this opportunity are Steve Waggoner and Brady Zimmer.

The Common Ground Thrift Store can always use more volunteers, especially during the business that summer brings. We need people to help run the store on Saturdays from 9-3 (and in the future, Fridays), organize and clean on Tuesday/Thursday nights from 5-7 and help deliver or pick up furniture around town. If you are interested in volunteering through the Thrift Store, please contact Katelyn Holmer for more information. If you are wanting to donate items, please visit the Thrift Store page for items we cannot take and the best times to drop them off. Katelyn would also appreciate anyone willing to assist in building some shelving upstairs and creating a fitting room out of one of the cubbies. Let her know if you can help!

  1. Our granddaughter from Texas, Hannah Clauser, is staying with us again this summer. When I read your email it said jr. High meeting as usual. When do they meet? Hannah just finished 7th grade. Last year she was active in pray, play and obey, but I noticed this year you are not having that? Linda Clauser

    1. Hello! This past school year we have been meeting as a community-wide youth group up at common ground (310 Locust) for both junior and senior high. We decided to just continue having them meet this summer as PPO. Junior high meets at 4:30 and senior high meets at 6:30. Hope that helps!
